Last Spring when the Planning and Conservation League (PCL) released “8 Affordable Water Solutions for California” some questioned our rationality at the call to convert thousands of acres of drainage impaired lands to job-creating solar generation. Today we welcome the latest announcement that about 1,000 acres of new photovoltaic solar will be installed in the San Joaquin Valley near San Luis Reservoir.
This project will create new installation and maintenance jobs and will produce affordable carbon free energy. The conversion of drainage impaired lands can also reduce the demand for water diverted from the Bay Delta Estuary. This is one important way that the Estuary can realize the water flows required for its restoration.
